Martyn WAKEMAN

Lecturer and researcher, EPFL
Switzerland

Biography:

Dr. Martyn Wakeman is a lecturer and researcher at the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland and a creative professional in sustainability, advanced composites and additive manufacturing. He has a keen interest in sustainability strategies and the circular economy coupled with entrepreneurship and innovation with a proven record of +20 yrs, spanning academia, start-up environments, and global corporations. He is currently a senior scientist attached to the Laboratory for Processing of Advanced Composites focused on trans-disciplinary sustainability strategies for advanced composites and a lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering in sustainable materials, products, and supply chains. Prior to this role he worked for 10 years at DuPont in Geneva, Switzerland developing continuous fiber thermoplastic composites. His activities also included a M&A role and strategy development in the advanced composite landscape.

About EPFL

The objective of the Laboratory for Processing of Advanced Composites (LPAC) is to establish the scientific base for the next generation of materials and processes in the fast-growing fields of polymers and composites. This involves novel approaches to tailoring material systems and process cycles, development of new materials with controlled rheology, solidification kinetics and surface characteristics, process simulation and costing, and quantitative durability analysis for optimal life cycle strategies. LPAC develops advanced processes for thermoset and thermoplastic composites, based on a fundamental understanding of flow and interfacial mechanisms. Focus is also put on smart composites, bioinspired composites, UV-curable composites, nanostructured materials, multilayer films, functional surfaces and life cycle engineering. Emphasis is placed on scaling up to an industrial context, particularly in the fields of aerospace, automotive, building, medical, electronics and sports.
