James HELLIWELL

Principal Design Engineer, Itero Technologies
United Kingdom

Biography:

As Principal Design Engineer at Itero Technologies, James Helliwell is responsible for the design and delivery of the core reactor system within Itero’s Brightlands Demonstration Plant, which will process mixed plastic waste back into valuable chemical feedstocks for circular plastics production. After graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cambridge, James joined McLaren Applied Technologies working on projects that included Formula 1, Indycar, wearable robotics, and sports equipment. Prior to Itero, James worked at hyperTunnel, where he developed swarm robotic systems for underground construction.

About Itero Technologies:

Itero Technologies is a chemical recycling technology provider, using its thermal conversion process (pyrolysis) to transform hard-to-recycle waste plastic into a chemical feedstock for brand-new circular plastics. Complementing traditional recycling methods, Itero diverts plastics from landfills and incineration, increasing recycling rates and reducing dependency on crude oil. At its Pilot Plant in the UK, Itero carries out R&D tests on diverse feedstocks and continual process refinement as it develops its first at-scale Demonstration Plant. This upcoming plant is capable of processing 27,000 tonnes of mixed plastic waste annually and will be located at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Sittard-Geleen, Netherlands. Itero has received funding from Infinity Recycling's Circular Plastics Funds, as well as a grant from the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO), and EUR 5m from the European Union’s Just Transition Fund.
