Adaptive Composite Propellers with Embedded SHM for Efficient and Maintainable Marine Propulsion
10 Mar 2026
Open Stage
This presentation presents an innovative composite marine propeller that leverages structural flexibility to passively adapt blade pitch under varying hydrodynamic loads. Optimised fibre orientations enable hydrodynamic–mechanical coupling at low computational cost, improving efficiency compared to rigid metal designs. The blades are manufactured to net shape by RTM and integrate embedded structural health monitoring using optical fibres and strain gauges. A lightweight underwater joining concept allows blade replacement, while integrated impact protection and advanced NDI methods enhance durability and maintainability.
