Combining Additive Manufacturing and Composite Reinforcements for Flexible Outifittings

The growing demand for personalized semi-custom yacht interiors raises environmental concerns due to inflexible composite moulds, leading to limited reuse, significant material waste, and high energy consumption. To overcome these critical issues, the research proposes new design approaches that leverage ecodesign strategies and the use of additive manufacturing processes combined with composite reinforcement solutions. Thanks to a panelling system with hollow ribs reinforced with composite material, it is possible to freely shape functional and furnishing elements. By exploiting this flexibility, the project demonstrates the possibility of producing lightweight components while reducing material waste and avoiding major investments in production tools.
