Ceramic Composite Liner for nuclear waste storage

IRT Saint Exupéry
This material is a sandwich manufactured by filament winding and composed of: An inner layer of 2mm of Carbon fiber reinforced CMC (PyroKarb) An Alumina core (three parts) An outer layer of 1mm of Carbon fiber reinforced CMC (PyroKarb)

Why and Whom

This product has been developed for nuclear waste storage for the needs of CIGEO project. Andra (french institution in charge of nuclear waste storage) is looking for materials with high corrosion resistance over a secular period as an alternative to low carbon steel.

Key Benefits

This proof of concept has a very good chemical inertia and can withstand corrosive atmospheres. Compared to metallic liners, this CMC liner is not going to need active corrosion protection during it''s use. It will reduce operating costs. Regarding the nuclear radiation no organic materials can be use. They have also withstand a geological environment (anisotropic pressure up to 10 MPa).
