Why and Whom
The main objective is to reuse the materials of our products after their use phase, in this case sidewalls of buses. VDL FI is developing mechanical recycling methods allowing the use of cured material as filler in new parts, formed on standard methods for composite manufacturing. It therefore increases the circularity of the composite parts produced by VDL FI.
Key Benefits
This solution is a lighter product than the original side skirt thanks to the use of foaming resin, with a glossy surface finish. It is more rigid than the original, needing less support on the bus and reducing its weight. It also includes scrap left overs from the side wall production, increasing circularity, and offers less than 3% water absorption while maintaining a moderate price.
